Frequently asked questions

Does it hurt?.

What do you think? You're getting poked with a needle! Well, ok, now that I have gotten your adrenalin flowing let's talk specifics. For most people the least painful is the nose and eyebrow. Then a bit more on the uncomfortable side would be the tongue, bellybutton and labret. Next up on the pain scale would be nipples and then the below the belt piercings.

Now that I'm pierced what do I do to take care of it?

All my customers get written after care directions. The best thing to use is Dial antibacterial liquid soap, the orange one you probably already have on your sink counter or any antibacterial soap that has Triclosan as the active ingredient (found on the back label usually).  If this seems to dry your piercing, which sometimes it will you can also use a non soap cleanser like Nutribiotic.   Antibacterial soap is used to clean piercings below the neck. For above the neck, ears, eyebrows, nose, labret we use an ear care solution. For tongue piercings all you have to use is Listerine cut half and half with water; we recommend getting a sports water bottle, pouring out half of the water and filling it back up with listerine. Every time you introduce something into your mouth or if you don't eat, drink or smoke for 2-3 hours Listerine anyway. It is so important to keep your piercings clean but not over cleaned; twice daily is all you need and always remember: WASH YOUR HANDS BEFORE TOUCHING YOUR PIERCING!!!! You'd be amazed at the number of people that sit and play with their fresh piercing just to have something to do. YUK! And they wonder why the damn thing won't heal!

What is this crusty stuff on the jewelry?.

That is the same stuff that comes out of a cut; the clearish liquid that forms the scab. It's ok, relax, it's normal. The most important thing to remember is never rotate your jewelry if it feels "stuck" because of the crusties; wet it with water or cleaning solution first to get the crusties off from around the holes of the piercing and off of the jewelry before trying to move it otherwise you are sandpapering off all the new cells you are trying to form as well as introducing bacteria back into the piercing.

When can I change my jewelry?

Most of the time you are pierced with jewelry that looks way too large but there is a reason; you have to allow for swelling. Tongues may be sized down from the normal 3/4" to 5/8" or 1/2" within 2-3 weeks; the tongue heals very fast because of it's tremendous blood flow. Eyebrow rings and labrets can be changed after 2-3 months but belly button jewelry shouldn’t be changed for at least 4 months. Nipples I recommend you stay with the size you were pierced with because when you go to a smaller diameter ring they have a tendency to stick out; not a particularly attractive look if you ask me and they get caught on clothes, people, doors etc. alot easier making it way too easy to tear them out.

Is it infected?

There are two different kinds of irritation; affected and infected. Affected is when the holes are red and tender with the normal crusting on the jewelry. This is just the normal healing process. To make it more comfortable you can put 1/2 teaspoon of SEA SALT (found in your grocery store next to the table salt) in 1 cup of water as hot as you can stand it. Depending on the location of the piercing you can either use cotton balls to soak the piercing or in the case of nipples and male genitals they can be dipped and swished. Infected is when the piercing is hot, oozing thick yellow/green pus and is very tender to the touch. If this occurs you need to go to your physician and have him/her take a look at it. One thing you don't want to do is take the jewelry out because if you take out the jewelry and the outer holes close up it will trap the infection inside with no way to escape.

They pierced my nose with a piercing gun, was that bad?.

Hell yes! Guns shouldn't even be used on ears as the piercing studs are just marginally sharp and shatter the cartilage of the ear or nose causing tremendous tissue damage which can at the least add to the healing time. Another bad thing about piercing with a gun is you get a stud put in; a ring will heal the hole alot faster as air and cleaning solution can get to the piercing better than with a stud. The BEST reason to never get pierced with a gun is it is not sterile; it has been near, around or up someone elses nose or ear! YUK!!!
